Last week I wrote a commentary on how the book that was the 2008 men's lacrosse season ended all but too quickly.
Therefore, I won't recap the entire season.
However, here are a few items to note - mainly those from a historical and statistical standpoint, which I thought should be brought to your attention.

The memory of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse will forever extend beyond the red gym, 54th street, and the Philadelphia zip code. It will forever be the home of the Hawks, and no multi-million dollar blueprint will ever change that.
Dedicated in November of 1949 to alumni who gave their lives in World War II, the first basketball game played on its court was a 62-46 loss to Rhode Island.

"With the 18th selection in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards select: Pat Calathes, Saint Joseph's University".
In just 47 days, Calathes, '08, hopes to hear these words from NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver. For now, it is only a reality in the latest mock draft on draftexpress.

A .227 batting average, seven RBIs, and zero home runs are certainly numbers worth forgetting, but shortstop Daniel Bierce '09 made sure he would remember these numbers from his admittedly sub-par season. "My sophomore year was the worst baseball season of my life," Bierce said.

As the weather gets warmer, students who do not spend their time on the Quad sunbathing take the opportunity to test their mettle against the best the college has to offer in a variety of "sporting" events, including campus golf, quoits, volleyball and Kubb.

The men's heavyweight and women's crew teams get set to push off this weekend in their respective Sprints races.
For the heavies, the race marks the beginning of the final leg of a disappointing seasons. For the 20th-ranked women, though, the Sprints is just another step towards national recognition.

Cory Vargo prepared for college the same way any 18-year-old from southeastern Massachusetts would prepare. He gathered his things, packed his green Celtics hat, two Red Sox caps, Patriots t-shirts, a Paul Pierce jersey and a few David Ortiz posters, threw them into a bag (along with some socks and underwear) and was on his way.

When the women's lacrosse team held its annual winter meeting in early 2005, the freshmen sat in the back of the room, as is customary for the team's youngest members.
But when the coaches asked the Quakers what their team goals were, the Class of 2008 had something to say.

He's not the type of player that dunks and draws attention to himself; he comes in there and does what's right for the time. He shoots the three like none other."

If they block us and then kick the shit out of us, fine, but don't try to hurt people, go for the knees, throw forearms, and that's what they were doing to some of the kids.

Two years as sports writer at the Daily Collegian; one as an unpaid assistant editor - that really should have been enough. And it probably would have had I taken school as seriously as writing game stories and sidebars about the six sports I've covered in my time here.

It's a four-hour drive to get from where Dan Berry used to be to where he is now.
"From Philly," he said. "We were coming up to Syracuse."
He couldn't forget. It was the first of five official visits to schools where he might spend the next four years. A trip with his twin brother Vince and best friend Ken Marfilius in the passenger seats.

For five days it was enjoyed by thousands of spectators. It packed multiple gyms on multiple days with a multitude of people. It brought life and vibrancy to the Wilf Campus and the New York Jewish community. And just like that it left us, with nothing remaining except hoarse voices, t-shirts, and keepsake pamphlets.

Some athletes simply love the limelight. Many players have tried to develop their excellence on the field into greatness on the big screen. For some it has failed; for others it has succeeded. Some have made us laugh with their humor and others have made us laugh (and almost cry) at their woeful acting.

The deadline for this story - which is supposed to encompass the entire year down here at the Collegian, which I spend nearly every second of my life at - was at 5 p.m. Naturally, I'm writing this sentence at 6:48 p.m. Yeah, I'm that guy.

When you are not a prospect from a well-known college football program there is a beaten path to follow into the NFL. The road runs through pro days and individual workouts and is lined with the rejected tapes of thousands of other skilled players who have treaded down the dirt path.
